This weekend we headed to Sikeston. We hadn't been there since the first of June and we had the Werner Family Reunion on Sunday.
We arrived Friday about 6pm and since it was Ben's parents anniversary, we made a quick trip up to Cape G to have dinner at an Italian Restaurant. I don't recall the name of it, it was downtown and yummy. Everyone had a tasty meal and we got to celebrate 39 years of their marriage.
Ben was excited to get to go back to Sikeston so he could get his Birthday/Christmas present. His parents had brought the banjo down to the beach, but we had NO room for a banjo or anything else for that matter in the vehicle on the trip back home.
Here's he and Bean have a go at it first thing Saturday morning.
Mrs Carole's husband Hank is co-owner of the music store in Owensboro and he said they have a guy who gives banjo lessons, so we are going to hook Ben up!
I was excited because I was going to meet Trish for lunch on Saturday with Mallory. You've probably heard me talk about my "preemie board" a zillion times, the only way I would have a clue about anything preemie or parenting for that matter, and Trish is the preemie momma who started the board just right before Mallory was born.
She and her husband live just outside of St Louis in IL but her husband is from Sikeston. I think he graduated from Sikeston High about 4 years before Ben, so they don't seem to actually know one another, but it doesn't really matter.
Trish's son Robbie was a 26 weeker I believe.
We met at Ruby Tuesday for lunch and it was nice. You feel like you get to know someone pretty well from just the conversations we have online, but it's great to meet them face to face. Even though my head was pounding from my stupid sinuses, we had a nice lunch and it was like we had known one another for a long time!
I totally failed to take any pictures, but oh well.
After we got back from lunch, Ben's parents loaded up with us and we headed out to the floodway that was flooded earlier this year when they blew the Birds Point Levee to save Cairo. We were all really worried about the cropland, would it recover, would it be a huge sandy mess that you couldn't farm again? It's some prime farm land and several HUNDRED THOUSAND acres that was flooded
Thankfully the farmland looked pretty good. Soybeans were planted throughout. I don't think I've ever seen that many soybeans in one area before. The houses were a different story. Some looked like the water only got up 3 feet or so, others looked like they were totally covered.
Saturday night was just relaxing at the house and having some deer steaks and dove/jalapeño poppers for dinner. We also discovered that Bean seems to think she's Popeye.....she's eaten enough spinach nuggets to qualify, lol!!
And a little more of Ben picking at his banjo.....I'm seeing a pattern here!
Sunday was early church and then the drive up to New Wells, MO, which is in the middle of no where, near where Ben's dad grew up.
This was the Werner reunion. We were excited to see Dan and Allison and Kendall since we hadn't seem them in forever! Well, ever for Kendall. She was born in July after Mallory in April.
Since my child will never sit still, here's the best picture I could get of Susan, Mallory, Allison and Kendall.
I'm just laughing at Mallory and that "let me down now" look on her face. That was pretty much her desire the entire day!
We also got to meet cousin Jaycee (and I'm sorry if I'm spelling that wrong, I'm not 100% on the spelling) and Sunday was actually her 3rd birthday. She is cousin Jason and Kim's daughter. She and Mallory got a big kick out of chasing each other around in Mallory's walker. Here's some action shots:
Overall it was a good weekend, got to see some people we'd never met before and some we hadn't seen in quite a while.
Mallory is slowing making some walking progress. Tonight in the middle of the living room floor she stood for a while on her own and was taking a few steps between the chair and ottoman. She's getting there eventually.
I find it funny the child refuses to walk yet but climbs like a pro mountain climber. She climbs up on the couch, then up you. She's like a cat, wants to be in the highest spot she can possibly get.
I think she's just not walking because we want her too. Stinker!
